CODE RED is an ongoing project started in 2010 by The Hamilton Spectator to explore the powerful impacts that the social determinants of health have on people in Hamilton.

Using data measuring a wide range of health, social and economic variables, CODE RED has been exposing disparities at the neighbourhood level in Hamilton through stories and maps.

    Steve Buist is an investigative reporter and feature writer at The Hamilton Spectator. He has won three National Newspaper Awards and been a finalist five times. He’s been named the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Investigative Journalist of the Year three times and Ontario’s Journalist of the Year three times. Buist has a B.Sc. in human biology and a Master’s degree in journalism, exploring the issue of how Canadian newspapers report the financial relationships that exist between university researchers and pharmaceutical companies.

    Neil Johnston is a faculty member in McMaster University’s Department of Medicine. He is   associated with the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, St. Joseph’s Healthcare. Johnston has had a longstanding research interest in asthma and pulmonary disorders, as well as the social determinants of health. He also runs the Ontario Physician Human Resources Data Centre for the province’s health ministry.

    Patrick DeLuca is a mapping and statistical expert at the Centre for Spatial Analysis in McMaster University’s School of Geography and Earth Sciences. He  teaches courses at McMaster in GIS and spatial statistics. Patrick’s research interests include air quality modelling, environment and health as well as regional variations in the quality of health and health care.
